Pet Food & Supply Drive To Support STARelief & PAWS

Fairfield residents are asked to re- purpose, re-gift and recycle items no longer needed for one pet to benefit another. Residents are asked to bring pet food and gently used or new pet supplies to venues all around Fairfield County and/or to the New Canaan Dog Days event on Sunday, June 8. These items will be used to help fill the wish list of supplies at STARelief, offering supplies and food to families who otherwise may have to give up their pets, and PAWS, a no-kill shelter finding forever homes for dogs and cats for over fifty years. Each person that donates at the New Canaan Dog Days event will receive a chance to win one of several door prizes donated by area businesses.

Items most requested at the shelter and at STARelief include: canned wet cat and dog foods, kitty litter, dry cat food, towels, and dog treats. Leashes, collars, beds, crates, toys, grooming supplies, carry cases, flea and tick treatments, cleaning supplies, etc.

Sites for drop off include: Bankwell – New Canaan and Stamford Branches, Paul’s Prosperous Printing — Norwalk, Village Critter Outfitter – New Canaan, Camp Bow Wow — Stamford, Lone Pine Kennel — Greenwich, and New Canaan Veterinary Hospital – New Canaan.

Village Critter Outfitter, a unique pet supply business in New Canaan providing personal service to pet owners for over fifteen years, offers a chance to purchase a pre-packed bag of needed items to be donated. Shirleen Dubuque, owner, suggested “Some people may want to give but don’t have the supplies requested at home and may not have the time to purchase items separately. These Super Hero bags help fill the need in a way that makes it easy for people to help the animals in need.” Super Hero pre-packed bags are available in denominations of $15, $30 and $45 at Village Critter Outfitter and on the event website at http://www.newcanaandogdays.com, though any donation amount is helpful.

Admission to New Canaan Dog Days is free. Participants gather in Village Critter Outfitter’s parking lot at 107 Cherry St. New Canaan and visit with exhibitors on Cherry Street, which will be closed to automobile traffic. A donation center will be located in the parking lot. For information visit http://www.newcanaandogdays.com.

Pets To Get Protection From

Domestic Violence

New Hampshire is the latest of a growing number of US states to draft legislation that would give victims of domestic violence the right to ask a judge to award them custody of their pet. The Bill, which was before the state’s lower house, would extend the protection already offered to human victims of domestic violence to household animals.

The campaign for protection for animals has united animal welfare and domestic violence groups in calling for a change in the law. Around half the states in the USA have enacted some sort of provision to include pets in protection orders. Chris Green of the Animal League Defense Fund, which is based in Washington DC, said that animal abusers are around five times more likely to harm their partners.
